A Community of Practice (CoP) is a network of engaged experts and practitioners from a sector or working area who come together as a group to regularly engage in peer -to- peer learning to improve their personal and collective group knowledge. The network offers an alternative to conventional knowledge sharing platforms that usually feature top-down development assistance and policy adoption by providing an inclusive member experience. The activities of each CoP focus on peer learning, expert assistance and knowledge exchange through discussions, workshops, seminars, case studies etc. in topics found to be of relevance to the members. There are five CoPs under the Asia LEDS Partnership (ALP).
The Building Energy Efficiency (BBE) CoP focus on building energy efficiency activities and convergence of sub-national building energy efficiency plans at national levels. The BEE CoP activities are designed with an intent to capture, support and facilitate the needs of sub-national governments to promote uptake of actions to enhance building energy efficiency.
Assisting governments to address challenges faced while implementing building efficiency measures, at both the subnational as well as national level across the Asian region
Developing quick response and sharing solutions, best practices and learnings centred on building efficiency to accelerate building efficiency uptake in the region
Supporting member governments and organisations to implement recommended solutions and interventions in a targeted and cost-effective manner
The session introduced participants to policy options and approaches that can help to tap into efficiency opportunities across building typologies. Government representatives and experts from India, Malaysia, and USA shared their experiences and insights from policies and programs to scale up building efficiency, including key aspects for effective design, implementation and compliance of policy actions to overcome on-ground barriers. The session focused on introducing the participants to the right suite of technology solutions and practices that can help in cost-effective implementation of energy efficiency measures in new and existing buildings. Energy efficiency experts from India, Mongolia, Germany and USA, who shared their insights on such technologies and practices. The webinar focused on financing solutions and related measures that cities, particularly ones in the Asian region, can adopt to support efficiency improvements locally. Financing options along with case studies were discussed by the speakers and panellists. Participants were provided with an opportunity to exchange their learnings and experiences on the same. The session highlighted opportunities that energy benchmarking offers to cities to advance building efficiency. Experiences and insights on energy efficiency benchmarking efforts from the region were shared with participants to support replication of similar initiatives.
The webinar will highlight the significance and impact of building materials on energy use and GHG emissions across the building lifecycle. It aims to share solutions, opportunities and challenges to adopt and accelerate the deployment of low-carbon building materials, aimed towards decarbonization of the buildings sector. Examples of action and case studies from South Asia and the Asian region on uptake of low-carbon building materials will be discussed by speakers. You can access the session recording here
The ZCBA through its local implementation partners is building national road maps and aligned city action plans in Colombia and Turkey and are preparing city action plans in Laikipia County, Kenya; Nagpur, India and a cluster of four cities in Costa Rica aligned with existing city goals and priorities. The roadmaps and action plans support the target cities in their ambitions to have all buildings operate at net-zero carbon by 2050. You can access the session recording here
This case study captures Nagpur city’s efforts in understanding the energy performance and identifying the potential and opportunities for energy efficiency actions in a small portfolio of buildings in the city.
Nagpur has been long interested in integrating green building principles into the design of social housing buildings and in improving the energy efficiency of existing stock of commercial and institutional buildings in the city. In this context, Nagpur joined the Building Energy Accelerator (BEA) initiative in 2018. As part of its deeper engagement with Nagpur, the BEA initiative supported the city in conducting pilot-level benchmarking study and energy audits to understand and identify the energy efficiency improvement opportunities in the city’s buildings.
The benchmarking study was undertaken for 10 public office buildings owned by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and 10 private hotels in Nagpur city, and helped the city to create a project pipeline for energy efficiency investment.
The BEE CoP focus on learning and technical collaboration on the following key topics:
Providing policy options to design a locally appropriate policy package that can help national and sub-national governments to address challenges and bridges the efficiency gap. It can also help them tap into opportunities available across different building types.
Financial instruments and approaches to encourage greater investments and enable implementation of building efficiency actions at scale by tackling economic barriers, lowering risks, and expanding the pool of available funds.
Adoption of the right suite of technology solutions and practices to realize energy savings in a costeffective manner, both in the design and construction of new buildings and in the renovation of existing/old buildings for improved efficiency.
