Data and modeling are essential tools for decision-makers to evaluate options, understand tradeoffs, and inform energy planning pathways.
We invite you to join us for our upcoming webinar, “Data and Modeling to Support Long-Term Energy Planning.” Experts will discuss data and modeling approaches used to support long-term energy planning across different country contexts and demonstrate how these tools can strengthen evidence-based policy and investment decisions. Speakers from the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) will showcase the use of the Engage, Sienna, and REeDS modeling tools in Argentina, Indonesia, and India. In addition, WRI India will highlight the use of the Indian Zero Carbon Energy Pathways (IDEEA) model.
This session will end with a Q&A with the audience.

Evolving Opportunities for Distributed Energy Resources (DER)’ and Battery Energy Storage Systems in Asian Cities’

Distributed Energy Resources, also known as DERs, are small-scale energy resources usually situated near sites of electricity use. Typical examples include rooftop solar PV systems located behind the meter or at the distribution transformer level. DERs often include some amount of battery storage.
DERs play an important role in supporting countries transitioning to a net-zero future. DERs may delay the need for expansion of transmission and distribution infrastructure; and enhance the flexibility and resilience of the energy system. Also, one of the most important advantages of DERs is that they can reduce electricity bills for consumers. For distribution utilities, this means access to flexibility and potential savings in transmission charges / losses for power procured from centralized power plants.
DERs could ensure access to electricity in regions where grid connectivity is limited. Many countries in the Asia region have successfully adopted DERs to increase electrification coverage.
This online session will delve into the evolving challenges and opportunities that come with the maturation of the DER market in the region. Some of the leading companies, such as ReNew Power, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and others, will share their experiences, lessons learned in adopting DERs.

Aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) of Chinese Taipei has been actively promoting the development of offshore wind power with a 3-phase strategy, including a Demonstration Incentive Program, Zones of Potential, and Zonal Development. To date, Phase 1 wind farms with a total capacity of 237 MW have been completed, and Phase 2 wind farms with a total capacity of 5.5 GW are expected to be commissioned by 2025. Phase 3 was launched with the aim to release 1.5GW annually from 2026 to 2035, totaling a capacity of 15 GW, to expand the domestic market, and promote the sustainable development of the offshore wind industry in the region.

Seagrass meadows are regarded as a crucial provider of blue carbon that supports the aim of achieving carbon neutrality in 2050. Many coastal nations have been actively combating the decline of seagrass meadows caused by climate change. Penghu Marine Biology Research Center initiated the seagrass restoration project in Penghu waters in 2013, marking Taiwan's first such endeavor. In just 9 years, the transplanted 60m2 seagrass meadow has grown to an impressive 2,300m2.

Session Description
As countries across the Asia Pacific work toward their climate goals under the Paris Agreement, the role of subnational governments is pivotal in turning national-level commitments into effective, place-based strategies and accelerating on-ground implementation. The session focuses on the importance of advancing climate-resilient development through sub-national and local integration of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
It examines how local leadership, integrated planning, and improved vertical coordination can enhance climate action outcomes. The session will further highlight the role of platforms in enabling collaboration, facilitating peer-learning, and providing technical assistance across various levels of government, with support from development banks in financing the climate ambition.
Drawing on experiences from the ambition of NDC 3.0 and innovative implementation examples across South and Southeast, the discussion will demonstrate the role of national commitments in driving local government action. Aligned with SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnership for the Goals), the session underscores the need for integrated and participatory urban planning, climate-resilient policies aligned with disaster risk reduction, and the localisation of national climate commitments through strengthened institutional capacities, knowledge exchange, and peer-learning. It further highlights the need for multi-level, multi-stakeholder partnerships in enabling coordinated climate action, and effective NDC implementation across the Asia-Pacific region.
